Last night Harriet in year 9 was invited to attend Nourishing Norfolk's one year celebration with the High Sheriff of Norfolk to celebrate the work they have achieved in their network of food hubs across the county. These food hubs offer people who are struggling with the rising costs of living a local place to shop on a budget and the chance to access the support they need to thrive. Harriet has been a volunteer for nearly a year in the social supermarket in the Charles Burrell Centre helping run the shop each week. 'Responsibility' is one of our school's community values. There are lots of ways that we can demonstrate this quality, and showing a responsibility towards one's community, especially during difficult times, is perhaps one of the most important. There are currently 15 hubs across Norfolk with a goal to open 10 more by June. To achieve their goal, they need Norfolk people to help Norfolk people. There are many ways you can help support, follow this link to find out more: https://www.norfolkfoundation.com/giving-and-philanthropy/back-our-key-initiatives/nourishing-norfolk/nourishing-norfolk-network/ @norfolkcf @Norfolk Community Foundation @charlesburrellcentre @Charles Burrell Centre #boardingschool #TGSTogether #TGSPathways #JourneyOfDiscovery #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool

Year 11 have been investigating the growth of micro-organisms as part of their topic on communicable disease. They performed 3 experiments using aseptic technique. 1. Where in the lab could they find microbes? 2. Grow just one specie of microbe without getting it contaminated. Using a broth of E.coli, write their initial or a simple picture. 3. Add antibiotic discs to bacteria to see which ones affect the bacterial growth. The clear areas around some of the disc indicate which antibiotics were effective. Here are pictures of their results.

The Year 5s are thoroughly enjoying their class text this term - Street Child by Berlie Doherty. As part of their literacy work, they have been busy refining their skills of textual prediction to continue the story with their own creative ideas. They all worked really hard to combine the use of vocabulary specific to the Victorian time period, and figurative language to convey the setting and emotive events. The first paragraphs of their creative writing have been displayed in class alongside their watercolour silhouette scenes.

This morning our Year 5s held their class assembly to the Prep School and parents. They shared their learning on the topic of Victorians by displaying a variety of class projects and acting as child labourers and Victorian school children. Following their performance, Mrs Butler-Hand invited parents to view the wonderful work that the class have been so busy working on all term. The Year 5s held animated conversations with their grown-ups, proudly presenting the work in their books. What a fantastic start to the week!

During the lunchtime of Tuesday 8th November, a team from each House, comprising of 6 students from Year 7 to 9, took part in the annual Senior Lit Quiz. The teams were pit against each other in a demonstration of their knowledge of children’s literature. From questions about a “book about a form of transport that was turned into a 1970’s film” (The Railway Children), to Billionaire Boy by David Walliams the teams worked well together to score points. After answering 20 questions the winners were……. Chronsheys! Well done to all those who took part.

Year 6 took an exciting trip to Africa Alive as part of their Topic work. They saw some of the animals they had been learning about in class. A workshop on adaptation was the first stop. Here they met a Spiny mouse from the Sahara Desert, a Leopard tortoise and a Royal Python. They were allowed to hold the mouse and touch the snake! Following from this they saw lions, zebras, giraffes, rhinos and many other smaller African animal and birds. An enjoyable day was had by all.
