Year 5 recently spent a day at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse, experiencing what life was like for children 150 years ago.
We spent some time practising our handwriting in a Victorian classroom before quickly being put to work on the farm. We were set to work picking up rocks from the field to protect the horse’s hooves, it was backbreaking work but surprisingly fun ... for 5 minutes before we got tired! Then we were sent to help Martha with the laundry and learnt how the Victorians washed their clothes. We worked really hard all day, so we were rewarded with some freshly cooked drop scones, they were surprisingly tasty and Mrs Clackett complemented us all on our manners and behaviour throughout the day.
Our day at Gressenhall really helped us to picture what life was like for Victorian children and brought our topic to life.
